The Tamagotchi (たまごっち, 拓麻歌子) tamaɡotꜜtɕi is a handheld digital pet, created in Japan by of WiZ and Aki Maitacitation needed of Bandai. It was released by Bandai on November 23, 1996 in Japan and May 1997 in the rest of the world, quickly becoming one of the biggest toy fads of the 1990s.

On March 20, 2004 Bandai launched Tamagotchi Plus, a new enhanced version of the original Tamagotchi virtual pet (originally released in 1996). Tamagotchi Plus is available in stores only in Japan. New Tamagotchis were also released to the European market in late May of 2004.
